Customize Your News Feed with Google’s New Features
Google has introduced powerful new tools that give users unprecedented control over their search results and news feeds. These features allow you to prioritize content from your favorite publishers and creators, ensuring you see the most relevant information first.
Highlighting Your News Subscriptions
In December 2025, Google unveiled a feature called Spotlighting subscriptions, designed to elevate links from news publications you subscribe to. This functionality will first appear in the Gemini app in the coming weeks, followed by integration into AI Mode and AI Overviews in Search. The feature ensures that content from your trusted sources appears prominently in your search results.
Following Favorite Publishers in Google Discover
Beyond the Top Stories section, Google has added the ability to follow your favorite publishers and creators directly in Google Discover. This personalized feed is accessible from the right side of your Android home screen, within the Google app, or from a new Chrome tab on your device. By selecting the follow button on content you enjoy, you can customize your feed to show more of what matters to you.
Understanding Google Top Stories
Google Top Stories is a dedicated section on the Google Search results page that showcases the most relevant and timely news articles related to your search query. This section appears as a carousel at the top of the page when Google identifies a current event, trending topic, or news-related search.
Quick Setup for Preferred Sources
For users of Chrome and Chromium-based browsers, there’s a streamlined method to add preferred sources. You can quickly set up your favorite news sites through a direct link that automatically loads them as a preferred source in your settings.
Will My Feed Show Only Preferred Sources?
No. Google maintains a balanced mix of sources in your Top Stories feed. However, articles from your preferred sources will appear more frequently when they’re relevant and recently published, giving you priority access to content from trusted publishers.
Managing Your Preferences
Your source preferences are flexible and adjustable. You can modify your selections at any time by accessing the star button next to Top Stories. Add new sources, remove existing ones, or adjust your preferences as your interests evolve.
Multiple Preferred Sources
Google allows you to add multiple preferred sources without limitation. According to Google’s data, over half of early testers selected four or more preferred sources, demonstrating the flexibility of this feature.
Requirements and Availability
Account Requirements
To use the Preferred Sources feature, you must be signed in to your Google Account. This ensures your preferences are saved and synchronized across your devices.
Global Rollout
The Preferred Sources feature is currently launching globally after a successful beta phase. The feature began testing last June, expanded to the US and India in August, and is now rolling out worldwide. The initial global launch focuses on English-language users, with additional language support planned for early next year.
If the feature isn’t available to you yet, it may still be rolling out in your region. The phased approach ensures a smooth user experience as Google expands this functionality to all users worldwide.
